Our hairs are formed in the hair follicles. Cell division takes place in the hair follicle. The color of the hair is determined by the amount of pigment (also called melanin) that is present in the hair follicles. The more pigment, the darker the hair will be. Additionally, the older you get, the less pigment will be created. The hair will thus gradually become grey.
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) indirectly inhibits the creation of sufficient melanin. Hydrogen peroxide occurs naturally in human metabolism. It is quickly broken down in younger people. In older people, this mechanism isn't working well anymore. The hydrogen peroxide that accumulates in the body will then break off the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for the production of sufficient melanin.
How old you you will be when your first grey hairs become visible, depends on several factors. First, genetics are of influence, for example did your parents become grey at an early age? Also, several studies have shown that stress and a poor diet affect the age at which you become grey.
The process of becoming grey can be slowed down by the enzyme catalase. Catalase causes the body to increase the production of melanin. As a result, hairs are able to restore to their original color.
