What to do about hair loss?

Tuesday 30 October 2012
This article has been written for people who want to know more about hair loss. The main topics are how to deal with hair loss and what can be done about it.

We also give advice on which products can be best used in different stages of hair loss.

What kind of hair loss am I dealing with?

It is important to know what type of hair loss you are experiencing before you start to treat it. The most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia, a hereditary type of hair loss that occurs in both men and women. In the male pattern, the hair on the crown and temples is getting thinner. The female pattern of Androgenetic Alopecia starts around the middle parting of the hair and gradually gets thinner in a diffuse way.

A description of other forms of hair loss can be read on our page about the different types of hair loss. If it is not clear what type of hair loss you have, consult a doctor or specialist.

Do not panic

Hair loss is a slow process and by the time you notice your hair getting thinner, it may be going on for a while already. The result of this is that many people will start counting the amount of hair that is lost after combing the hair or after a shower. Don't do this, the only thing that you accomplish with this is more stress, which is even worse for the loss of hair. Losing hair is normal, so do not panic. Nowadays there are sufficient ways to deal with hair loss.

Take action

Once you have determined what type of hair loss you are dealing with and you have yourself well informed about the possibilities, it is time to take action. The sooner you start applying hair growth products, the better the effect will be. Hair growth products have an easier time when it comes to maintain the current hair than when it comes to regrow the hair you lost.

It is important to use well proven products. You can find a lot of hair growth products at drug stores and online stores but that does not necessarily mean that the positive effects of those products have been scientifically proven. The Hair Growth Specialist only offers products that have been proven effective. We have a wide range of products which can be used for a complete treatment.

Compose a treatment

First off, it is important to know what type of hair loss you are suffering from. Second, it is important to decide the current stage of your hair loss. And finally, personal preferences play a role: a nutritional supplement for example is easier to use than a lotion.

The table below describes which combinations are a good treatment in the different stages of hair loss. You can always contact us for personal advice. For medical advice, we recommend a consultation with a doctor or dermatologist.

Situation:

Preventive or for healthier hair

The hair is not thinning (yet), but extra hair growth, healthy hair and the prevention of hair loss is desired.

Advice:

A nourishing shampoo containing 0.25% ketoconazole forms a good basis for the treatment. Use, when desired, a conditioner which nourishes the hair and stimulates hair growth.

To support healthy hair growth, use a nutritional supplement with various hair growth stimulating ingredients and the essential vitamins and minerals. Make your choice using our comparison of nutritional supplements.

Combine with one or more from this group:
Situation:

Early stage of hair loss

The hair loss is in an early stage. The hair is getting thinner at the temples and/or crown (in men). Women find that the hair on top of their head is getting thinner, and/or the hair around the middle parting is thinner (middle parting is somewhat wider than before).

Advice:

A shampoo nourishes the scalp and stimulates hair growth. Choose which shampoo suits you best using this comparison. Use, when desired, a conditioner which nourishes the hair and stimulates hair growth.

Combine preferably with a nutritional supplement containing various hair growth stimulating ingredients, DHT inhibitors and the essential vitamins and minerals. Make your choice using our comparison of nutritional supplements.

Situation:

Moderate hair loss

The hair loss is clearly visible. In men, the hair on the crown and/or the temples is thinning. Women find that their hair is thinning around the middle parting (wide middle parting), and/or on top of their head.

Advice:

A combination of two, but preferably three, different kinds of treatments is important for satisfactory results. A shampoo, lotion, and/or nutritional supplement use different mechanisms of action and, therefore, complement each other well.

Another option is the combination of a shampoo with a laser helmet.

Advanced hair loss

Hair loss is already at an advanced stage. The crown is balding and/or the hairline has receded (in men). In women, hair on top of the head, and/or around the middle parting of the hair, is thin.

Advice:

A combination of three different kinds of treatments is essential to get good results. This applies even more when regrowth is a goal. There are several products suited for advanced hair loss.

Be realistic and continue the treatment

Hair growth is a slow process. On average, healthy hair will grow 1.25 cm (0,5 inch) per month but if the hair follicles are affected because of hereditary hair loss, it can go much slower. Hair growth is a gradual process. Also, it may take a while before the treatment begins to take hold. For these reasons, it is important to continue the treatment at least 3 months. Often the treatment will start to be at full strength at around 6 months. So do not be discouraged if after two weeks you don't see any effect. Give it a fair chance and keep continuing the treatment in accordance with regulations.

Effects on hair growth are difficult to observe. Especially if you look in the mirror every day. Let others occasionally look at you, they are often more objective.

Watch your health

Hair growth products may cause side effects, so always read the instructions carefully. Talk to a doctor about what products to use. Don't ever use more than the recommended doses. More isn't always better.

In addition, it is important to think about your physical and mental health. For example, smoking accelerates the process of becoming bald due to the increase of DHT. Try to exercise on a regular basis, don't drink too much and eat healthy.
