Biotin for healthy hair: How it works

Biotin for healthy hair: How it works

Biotin for your hair (Vitamin B8)

Eating well and healthily is already important for your health, but the food you eat also affects your hair and hair growth. A common reason for poor hair condition or hair loss is a lack of essential vitamins. Biotin is the most important vitamin that can help you in your battle with hair loss. Also called vitamin B8 or vitamin H, it helps keep hair and skin healthy. Adequate intake of biotin is, therefore, essential for maintaining healthy hair.

What is biotin?

Vitamins are nutrients found in our food and drink. They are essential to our digestion by helping to convert our food into energy and other nutrients. The body does not produce vitamins (with some exceptions), so it is essential to get enough of them. Scurvy is a well-known example of a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency.

Different vitamins are important for various aspects of the body. Biotin, for example, ensures the release of energy from our food and is important for the normal functioning of the nervous system. In addition, it ensures the maintenance of normal skin and hair.

Biotin deficiency

Rocky Balboa had to be careful with his iconic training for that important boxing match. Because by consuming those glasses of raw eggs, he could develop a vitamin B8 deficiency. This is because raw chicken eggs contain a substance called avidin, which attaches itself to biotin. This means that biotin can no longer be absorbed by your body. A shortage of biotin is actually quite rare in the Netherlands. But it's not good for your skin and hair if you don't get enough of it. It can lead to skin disorders, fatigue and anaemia.

Vitamin B8 is found in varying amounts in many foods. So, a healthy person who eats enough in a day will generally get enough biotin. Good sources are soy products, nuts (especially almonds and hazelnuts), peanuts (a legume), eggs and milk. Vitamin B8 can even be found in high amounts in organ meats.

If you want to be sure of getting enough biotin, it is advisable to take supplements that contain biotin. This is because the body absorbs supplements much better. You do not need to be afraid of a surplus of vitamin B8. It is a water-soluble vitamin, and any excess is simply flushed out.

What is biotin?

Does biotin have any disadvantages?

There is no convincing evidence that an excess of biotin can be harmful. There are no limits set within the European Union on the maximum amount of biotin allowed in supplements. Since biotin is water soluble, the body does not store a surplus. However, as with all supplements, if there are special circumstances such as pregnancy or a medical condition, it is wise to discuss taking biotin with a doctor.

Biotin against hair loss: when do I start seeing results?

Most people who take extra biotin for hair loss will not see noticeable changes in the first few months. When it comes to hair growth, patience is a virtue. For the best results, you need to be consistent and have patience.
People do report that biotin quickly makes hair fuller and stronger.

Which biotin treatment do we recommend?

Biotin supplements

Increasing your biotin intake by eating biotin-rich foods is a bit tricky. We understand that not everyone is a fan of organ meats, which do not always fit well with one's diet. Therefore, it is easier to supplement your diet with supplements. Not only does it positively affect hair growth, but a daily intake of biotin can also improve the health of your skin and nails. An added benefit of the supplements in our range is that they are packed with other nurturing vitamins and nutrients. Neofollics supplements are also completely vegan and gluten-free.

Shampoos and conditioners with biotin

Shampoos and conditioners containing biotin provide proteins that work well against hair damage and split ends. The biotin in these shampoos and conditioners can improve the status of the hair in several ways. The biotin thickens the hair, and it can also improve the hair's elasticity, make it stronger and prevent damage to the hair. Using a conditioner with biotin in it completes the treatment. Conditioners care for the hair, moisturise it and also stimulate its growth.
